Textiles used to have symbolic, cultural, and economic importance in societies around the world. Few age-old traditions have survived. Fez, Morocco is a rare and fascinating exception. An astonishing variety of handmade textile traditions still exist, nurtured by local demand especially for weddings.
This video provides a rare oppurtunity to,go behind the scenes. You will see the making and use of eight different types of fabrics and clothing, meet artisans, merchants and consumers, and attend a wedding where handmade fabrics symbolize regional pride. Some traditions are thriving, others threatened, and one will soon be extinct. You will see:
Weaving Simple looms & rare ancient drawlooms
Trimming Buttons, bands & decorated seams
Embroidery Gold-thread & cross stitch
This video is designed for educational insitutions- individuals, and fiber artists. Anyone interested in textiles & costume, anthropology, material culture, art history, and Middle Eastern & North African Studies will be impressed.
